Bone Mineral Density Scan

INTRODUCTION

Understanding Bone Health

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan is the gold-standard test for assessing bone strength and diagnosing or monitoring osteoporosis and osteopenia. Using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) technology, the scan measures the mineral content and density of your bones – most commonly at the hips and spine – providing a precise indicator of fracture risk and long-term skeletal health.

Why Bone Density Matters

Low bone density is common and often silent. According to Osteoporosis Australia, over 6 million Australians have low bone mass, placing them at higher risk of fracture even from minor falls. BMD testing allows for early detection – giving you time to strengthen your bones through lifestyle and treatment before problems arise.

What Causes Low Bone Density?

Osteoporosis and Osteopenia

  • Overview: A progressive loss of bone density, making bones fragile and prone to fractures.
  • Causes: Ageing, hormonal changes (especially post-menopause), long-term corticosteroid use, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, excessive alcohol, low body weight, and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Risks: Hip, wrist and vertebral fractures, reduced mobility, spinal curvature, chronic pain.
  • Treatment options: Weight-bearing and resistance exercise, adequate calcium/vitamin D intake, lifestyle changes, and prescribed medications such as bisphosphonates or hormone therapy.

What to Expect

A BMD scan is simple, painless and non-invasive. You’ll lie fully clothed on a padded table while the DEXA arm passes slowly over you. The radiation exposure is minimal – less than a day’s natural background radiation.

Your scan will produce T-scores (comparison with healthy young adults) and Z-scores (comparison with age-matched peers). We will interpret these scores in plain language and outline recommendations if follow-up is required.
