Preventive Health & Lifestyle Monitoring

INTRODUCTION

See Your Health Before It Becomes a Problem

Modern medicine increasingly focuses on prevention – identifying risks before disease develops. At Bone Muscle Scan, our Preventive Health & Lifestyle Monitoring services empower you to understand your body from the inside out, using accurate, medical-grade DEXA imaging to assess fat, muscle, and bone health.

Whether you’re looking to prevent chronic illness, maintain lifelong strength, or simply track how your lifestyle choices are shaping your health, our scans provide the clarity you need to make informed, lasting changes.

The Importance of Preventive Health

In Australia, two-thirds of adults are living with overweight or obesity, and nearly one in four have low levels of physical activity. Many of the resulting conditions – diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis – progress silently until they cause damage.

DEXA scans allow early detection of metabolic imbalance, muscle loss, or bone weakening, long before symptoms appear. By tracking your internal health rather than relying on outward appearance or weight alone, you can take meaningful action while outcomes are most reversible.

What We Monitor

Our preventive health assessments can include:

  • Visceral fat (VAT) volume – a marker for metabolic and cardiovascular risk
  • Total and regional fat distribution – helps detect unhealthy fat patterns
  • Lean muscle mass and symmetry – identifies early signs of muscle decline (sarcopenia)
  • Bone mineral density – tracks bone health and fracture risk
  • Longitudinal comparisons – measures changes across time to confirm progress

Common Conditions

Common Conditions Identified Through Preventive Scanning

  • Overview: Decreased bone density increasing the risk of fractures.
  • Causes: Ageing, menopause, low vitamin D, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle.
  • Risks: Fragility fractures, spinal deformity, chronic pain.
  • Treatment options: Weight-bearing exercise, adequate calcium/vitamin D, medication (if required), repeat DEXA to track progress.
  • Overview: Progressive decline in muscle mass and strength from mid-life onwards.
  • Causes: Physical inactivity, protein insufficiency, hormonal changes.
  • Risks: Falls, frailty, slower metabolism, reduced mobility.
  • Treatment options: Strength training, higher-protein diet, lifestyle modification, regular body composition scans.
  • Overview: A cluster of risk factors (abdominal fat, high blood pressure, high glucose, abnormal cholesterol).
  • Causes: Excess visceral fat, poor diet, inactivity, stress.
  • Risks: Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, heart disease, stroke.
  • Treatment options: Targeted exercise, nutrition changes, weight loss, stress management, follow-up monitoring.

How It Works

The scan itself is quick, painless, and non-invasive – taking around ten minutes. You’ll simply lie on a padded table while the low-dose DEXA arm passes over your body. Results are delivered as precise metrics and easy-to-read visual graphs.

Your report is personally reviewed by our specialist doctor, who adds medical commentary to explain what your results mean and whether follow-up testing is advised. Many patients choose to repeat the scan every six to twelve months to monitor progress and stay accountable.
